OIC/DC provides a comprehensive literacy program that enable adults to acquire educational, occupational and life skills that will equip them to become responsible citizens and productive members of the workforce. OIC/DC’s program is designed to prepare participants to enter job training at OIC/DC or other job training programs, raise their grade level at least one grade and/or prepare them for the GED. After literacy training, if a participant enters the job training program, OIC/DC will place participants into full time jobs with upward mobility. Job placement services will also be offered to participants that do not choose to enter job training.
The target populations at OIC/DC are: low income adults with incomes of less than 30% of the poverty level; and persons that are single heads of household, many on TANF. Participants have multiple barriers to employment such as limited education attainment, limited employment experience, ex-offenders, and low self-esteem. The program includes adult basic education training, adult secondary education training/GED, life skills and work readiness training and occupational skills training and job development and placement.
OIC/DC will focus on assisting participants in gaining reading and math skills as well as valuable workplace skills. OIC/DC utilizes the outstanding PLATO Learning System and Workplace Essential Skills materials as two of the tools to increase academic and life skills.
