The
academic enrichment is provided every Saturday during the fall and
everyday for 5 weeks during the summer. Starting with a diagnostic
session , learning needs, an individualize learning plan is created
with each young person that specifically is focused on areas were
they are behind the grade level for their age cohort.
During
the summer, as a regular part of each week's program, the students
receive a minimum of six hours of basic education training. There
is a post test at the end of the summer session to measure the learning
gains that the young people have experienced. During the fall, the
youth receive 2 hours per week of academic enrichment. It is anticipated
that all of the young people who complete the program will experience
gains in both their reading and math abilities. All students receive
2 hours of occupational classroom training per week during the fall
on Saturdays. Each student receives 8 hours of home work assignments
that include occupational and academic material.
As
an enhanced feature for this program, the academic instructors work
with the occupational project instructors to identify and integrate
contextual learning material in the academic enrichment portion
of the program. The career related material is directly relate to
the two industry sectors that are a part of the program; Media/Publications/Communication
and Information Technology / Telecommunications. This is being added
to the instruction plan of service in order to make the academic
enrichment more meaningful to the learners and to show the young
people the direct connection between education and success in the
career project.
To
motivate the youth to achieve, OIC/DC's Project Y.COM and Radio
One, Inc. 93.9 Kiss FM (WKYS) launched The Live Squad's "Tour
of Excellence" - Students Helping Achieve K( c)urriculum
Excellence achievement school tour. A tour geared to address the
issue of low standardized test scores in the Washington metropolitan
area school systems. By using the energy and the format of JIVE
recording artist Mystical's new single, "SHAKE IT FAST",
WKYS' Live Squad and Project Y.COM will spread their campaign of
increasing test scores this school year by visiting area schools
and signing students up to pledge, "I will join OIC/DC to do
my best in school , because the Live Squad loves me".
The
promotion was for 4-months (October through January) and will include
a celebration for area school youth before they break for the summer.
The Live Squad visited as many schools as possible within the promotional
time frame. OIC/DC will also work to get promotional appearances
by celebrities, political leaders, community leaders and professional
athletes to accompany Live Squad to some of the area schools. The
Live Squad hosted a 30-minute to 1-hour assembly registering youth
and encouraging youth to do their best when it comes to their standardized
test. Eight schools are currently participating with more than 900
youth.
